TVO Roundup: Marine Corps Marathon, Las Vegas Half, Signal Mountain Pie Run and More

Area runners had great success at events big and small this week, as the TVO Roundup shows from the throngs of the Marine Corps Marathon to fun short runs nearby.

Las Vegas Half-Marathon

LAS VEGAS — Shannon and Kevin Green of Huntsville completed the Las Vegas Half-Marathon on Oct. 26 with a personal best time.

They completed the race in 1:42, crossing the finish line in downtown Las Vegas. It started in the mountains west of town in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Signal Mountain Pie Run

CHATTANOOGA — Benjamin Sparks of East Ridge, Tenn., won the Signal Mountain Pie Run 10K in 36:09 on Oct. 25.

Anne Elise Wester of Signal Mountain took the women’s title, crossing in 38:15.

William Shaver, 18, of Huntsville was sixth overall and won the 15-19 age group with a fine 37:54.

The race had 286 official finishers. It was the RRCA Tennessee 10K championship and is put on by the Chattanooga Track Club.

Marine Corps Marathon, Half

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A handful of area runners completed the scenic Marine Corps Marathon and half-marathon over the weekend.

Kyle Sundey of Huntsville paced area finishers in the marathon with his time of 3:11:02, followed by Dan Riefenberg of Huntsville in 3:14:47.

Kiera Larson of Huntsville finished the half-marathon in 1:56, and David McClennan of Knoxville crossed in 1:35.

Firewater Ultra

GREENBACK, Tenn. — Andrew Bailey of Signal Mountain, Tenn., won the Firewater Ultra 100K on Oct. 25 with a time of 11:31:44.

Bailey finished more than 20 minutes ahead of Ashley Rolewicz-Pipkin of Knoxville, who crossed in 11:54.

Dustin Finlayson of Flat Rock was fifth in 14:13:44. Christy Scott of Owens Cross Roads was 10th in 16:02.

Jerry Odell of Flat Rock completed the 50K in 10:52:54.

Walking Tall 50K

POCAHONTAS, Tenn. — Deanna Doane won the Walking Tall 50K trail ultra in record time on Oct. 18, and almost set the course overall course record.

Doane, 27, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., won the race in 4:41:33. That puts her atop the women’s Top 10 records, and was just six minutes off the course record set in 2019. Doane’s time puts her No. 2 on the overall record list.

Cam Mann of Muscle Shoals finished 16th in 6:27:13. Elizabeth Collinsworth of Killen was 41st in 7:45:20.

Helping Hands Half-Marathon

FLORENCE — Stephen Otey and Yate Hirbo captured top honors in the Helping Hands Half-Marathon on Oct 25.

Otey, 35, of Tupelo, sped to a 1:13 finish to nab the win by about 12 minutes.

Hirbo, 10, of Florence, was fourth overall and finished in 1:26:30. She was the youngest competitor in the half.

Seth Hill of Killen won the 5K in 22:42.
