With fireworks to start the race and more booming throughout Jones Valley at midnight, runners and walkers greeted the new year at the second annual Run Into 2026 5K.
The field of 240 started the race at 11:59 p.m. in front of Fleet Feet for three loops around the empty Valley Bend Shopping Center parking lot. That was 90 more than in the inaugural event last year. Volunteers checked entry points to keep vehicles out, and family and friends cheered runners on at the finish line.
Jonathan Falwell, 33, of Owens Cross Roads, took overall honors with a smooth time of 20:40. Theo Goins, 40, of Madison, was second in 22:05, and Gene Desanti, 42, of Huntsville was third in 22:17.
Sasha Stark, 14, of New Market, took women’s honors and was ninth overall. She finished in 23:43. Malia Kubia, 25, of Cullman, was second (11th) in 24:59, and Leah Gauldin, 31, of Huntsville, was third (17th) in 25:59.
Falwell and Stark received Hoka backpacks for their wins. Falwell also received a bottle of Champagne, courtesy of Tennessee Valley Outsider, and Stark received a bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling water.
The field was from nine states including Texas and Maryland. Runners enjoyed post-race hot pancakes and refreshments.
