WKND Wrap: Half Marathons, 5Ks and More

Summer is rushing at us quickly, with vacations and other fun outings, and the WKND Wrap has been busy lately keeping up with everything.

Race to Space

Erick Kigen of Huntsville won the Race to Space marathon on March 21 by more than seven minutes.

Kigen, 37, finished in 2:39:08 to take top honors. Jason Fresh, 43, of Cullman, was second in 2:46.

Katie Billington, 27, of Huntsville, won the women’s title and was eighth overall. She finished in 3:19.

Michael Smith, 29, of Lawrenceville, Ga., won the half marathon in 1:14. Megan Allan, 42, of Huntsville, won the women’s title and was third overall. She finished in 1:19.

Coke 10K

TUPELO — Mason Wood of Florence was the top area finisher in the 45th Coke 10K on May 2.

Wood, 33, finished 17th in 39:12. Scotty Aycock, 49, of Florence, was 23rd in 40:16.

Ashland City Half Marathon

ASHLAND CITY, Tenn. — Erick Kigen of Huntsville finished 10th in the 6th annual Ashland City half marathon on March 7.

Kigen finished in 1:17:58. Caleb van Geffen of Birmingham won in 1:11:15.

Garrett Moss of Huntsville was 18th in 1:22:53.

The race in Ashland City, about 20 minutes west of Nashville, is held on a flat, USATF-certfied course. Runners start at Riverbluff Park, hit the Bicentennial Greenway and loop back to the finish along the Cumberland River on Chapmansboro Road. The race is put on by the Nashville Track Club.

National Cornbread Festival 5K

SOUTH PETERSBURG, Tenn. — Josh and Samantha Whitehead of Madison swept top honors at the National Cornbread Festival 5K on April 25.

Josh, 47, won the overall title with a finish of 19:02. Samantha, 41, claimed the women’s title in 22:56. They also won the titles in 2025.

David McKannan 5K

Jake Baker of Huntsville won the David McKannan Memorial 5K on April 25 at Ditto Landing.

Baker, 27, won by more than a minute, finishing in 19:37. Tyler Roe, 34, of Huntsville, was second in 20:45.

Shelby Britt, 38, of Huntsville, was fourth overall and won the women’s title in 21:59.

The run is held in memory of David McKannan, an avid runner, loving father, husband and brother who lost his battle with ALS in 2012. It is put on annually by Huntsville Track Club.

Arbor Day 5K

Nathaniel Pierce and Drake Patton took the top two spots in the Arbor Day 5K on April 25 at Huntsville Botanical Garden.

Pierce, 39, of Huntsville, won the race with a time of 17:02. Patton, 24, was right behind in 17:20 for second place and the women’s title.

Space City Half Marathon

HOUSTON — Suzanne Swift of Owens Cross Roads finished 85th in the Space City Half Marathon on April 19.

Swift, 57, finished in 1:50:16. She was 85th out of 519 finishers.

First Priority 5K

DECATUR — Bryce McConnell of Moulton won the First Priority 5K on April 11 at Decatur Baptist Church.

McConnell, 17, finished in 17:50 and won by four seconds.

Lucy Daigre, 17, won the women’s title. She was 18th overall, finishing in 23:32.

The race is put on by the River City Runners. The event benefits First Priority / Clothe Our Kids campus ministries and students in Morgan, Lawrence, and Cullman counties.
