The Big Run, an annual 5K to celebrate Global Running Day is scheduled for June 3 at John Hunt Park.

The run starts at 6 p.m. Registration is required. It includes a 5K and post-run cookout with ice cream and music.

Proceeds will help the Girls on the Run and Black Girls Run local organizations. Also on hand for support will be Fleet Feet, Swift Recovery, Return2Sport and the Team Rocket Tri Club.

Runners around the world celebrate Global Running Day, held annually on the first Wednesday in June. Brooks Running is the presenting sponsor.

The Big Run continues on June 6 with a twist, as part of the Heel & Crank Duathlon at Adtran. The event is put on by the Team Rocket Tri Club. It starts with a 5K, then a 14-mile bike ride, finishing with another 5K.

Runners can participate in The Big Run 5K on June 6 but aren’t obligated to do the duathlon. It’s a combo affair, offering runners a second chance at The Big Run if they can’t make it for the one at John Hunt Park.

New Wet Dog Tri Logo

Wet Dog Triathlon, one of the most popular in North Alabama, has a new logo for its July 11 race this year.

The event is being managed by the Team Rocket Tri Club of Huntsville, with longtime race director Leah Brown still involved. It’s held at Point Mallard Park in Decatur, a solid facility for the event. The new logo is part of a refresh for the event.

Athletes will have a 400-meter open water swim, 15K bike ride and 5K run. It starts at 7 a.m. Team options are available. It is the second event of the 3-race Summer Series. Other races are the Heel & Crank Duathlon on June 6 and Huntsville Sprint Tri on Aug. 8.

Wet Dog Tri proceeds will help Tennessee Valley Outreach, Morgan County Rescue Squad, and the Princess Theater.

Ditto Gets Kayak Launch

Ditto Landing and Yellowhammer Outdoor Development have been selected as a 2026 recipient of an Alabama Scenic River Trail (ASRT) Waterway Enhancement Program grant to support a new kayak launch area.

“We’re grateful to receive this 2026 grant from ASRT,” said Brandi Quick, Executive Director at Ditto Landing. “The funding will further help us with the procurement and installation of a kayak launch at East Harbor. We’re excited to get to work on improving access and experiences on our local waterways.”

The grant is for $5,000. The program supports community-driven efforts in Alabama to improve freshwater recreation access and promote water safety.

The money will be used to further the “Ditto Landing Kayak Launch at East Harbor.” This project will assist with the installation of a launch to create a safer access to the Tennessee River. Ditto Landing and Yellowhammer Outdoor Development are one of seven organizations receiving grants this cycle.
