More than 500 runners, joggers, strollers, ruckers, kiddos, doggos and cheering friends celebrated Global Running Day on Wednesday at two big events in Huntsville.
Global Running Day is held annually on the first Wednesday in June. It began in 2009 as National Running Day in the United States. The event was rebranded and expanded in 2016, with running companies, clubs and others joining to promote the activity.
Wednesday evening at John Hunt Park, about 200 runners competed in The Big Run 5K presented by Brooks Running. The field toodled around the chipped rubber course, with all ages and speeds enjoying the evening. It was put on by Fleet Feet, with free hot dogs, watermelon, popsicles, sodas, music and vendors.
Frank Kipruto sped to the overall win, in 15:40, while Bryana Wilson took the women’s title and was seventh. She finished in 22:29. See all of the results here, and photos here.
Just up Memorial Parkway from the park, more than 270 folks hit 3- and 5-mile routes at the weekly Huntsville Pub Run. This week’s pubbers were based at RunningLane. It was a record turnout for the pub run, which has been kickin’ around town for 10 years. It meets weekly at different locations, such as The Nook, Campus 805, Yellowhammer Brewing, Big Ed’s Pizza, Sam and Gregg’s, and other locations.
