Feeling frisky and want to put a hundy in your shorts pocket or tights? A record performance in the Race for Justice 10K or 5K could do it.
The upcoming Labor Day races at Joe Davis Stadium feature record bonuses. Break the men’s or women’s course records and you’ll win $100. That’s easily more than the entry fee for either race, and double the $50 to do both. That nice bump will pay for your WaHo loaded bowl and coffee, or ribs and co’brews for lunch at the lake.

5K: Brooks Johnson, 19:02, and Nina Sillivant, 20:45
The courses are certified, so smoke a good time and maybe you could set a state age record, too. Both are presented by Jason M. Jones. Proceeds benefit the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program.

RunningLane Track Tour
A new high school track and field competition, the RunningLane Track Tour Presented by Nike, will begin with four events in spring 2027.
Coros also is on board with support. Coros makes a variety of watches, sensors and other monitoring options for athletes.
The four events will “feature marquee distance races including the Mile and 3200m, along with sprints, field events, and a full lineup of relays.” RunningLane designed the events to help teams and athletes reach postseason qualifying standards.

Free 2 Teach Expands
Free 2 Teach is expanding to Morgan County thanks to a partnership with Sen. Arthur Orr, who is providing community service grant funds to help 45 additional schools.
These funds will help open the organization’s teacher resource center. It will serve all teachers and school staff in Morgan County Schools, Decatur City Schools and Hartselle City Schools.
The expansion will extend access to Free 2 Teach’s free resources and support to educators in additional 45 public schools. This will create a total reach of 158 public schools across eight public school systems. Free 2 Teach is open year-round to more than 6,000 educators working with nearly 97,000 children.
“Free 2 Teach has built a powerful model that brings community resources directly into the hands of educators and helps teachers make their classroom dollars go further,” Orr said. “I’m proud to support its expansion into Morgan County and the tremendous work already happening across our schools. This is a practical investment in our teachers, our students and the future of our communities.”
The organization was co-founded in 2011 by the late Eula Battle of Huntsville. It operates a community-supported, year-round free supply store serving public school teachers and school staff in Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties.
“Senator Orr has been a longtime supporter of education across our state and our region,” said Free 2 Teach CEO Alison Kling. “This significant grant funding is a continuation of his powerful commitment to educators. We are so honored and excited to serve this incredible community and support the amazing work already happening in schools across Morgan County.”
Free 2 Teach operates with a vision to empower teachers with the tools they need to ensure every child has access to an excellent education. Its Huntsville resource center is open 11 months of the year, and public school teachers and school staff can shop for free every month. Since its founding, Free 2 Teach has distributed more than $17 million in supplies.
Free 2 Teach is the beneficiary of the annual Paper Chase 5K, usually held in late February in downtown Huntsville. It’s one of the area’s most popular and fun races. The race has had record fields the last few years, with more than 550 runners and walkers in 2025.
