GUNTERSVILLE — Ray Thompson cruised to a comfortable win against a record field Saturday morning in the Family Services of North Alabama Taco Trot 5K.
The lovely out-and-back course along with Belin tacos and horchata at the finish line attracted the biggest field in race history. With 147 official finishers, along with other donations, organizers were thrilled because proceeds help benefit the Family Services of North Alabama. The organization serves families in Blount, Cherokee, DeKalb, Etowah, Jackson, Marshall and St. Clair Counties.
Thompson, 36, of Guntersville, jumped out to a nice lead and held on for an 18:42 finish. William Summers, 30, of Scottsboro, was second in 19:50. Ty Caffarelli, 16, of Trenton, Ga., was third in 19:56.
Dominga Perez Batz, 25, of Blountsville, won the women’s title and was eighth overall. She finished in 22:23. Luz Belen Dela Cruz was second (13th) in 24:10.
The race started and ended at the Guntersville Recreation Center on Sunset Drive. Runners toodled out halfway on the road, with safety assistance from Guntersville Police Department, and returned on the lakeside greenway.
