About the NYC Marathon

The TCS New York City Marathon celebrated its 50th anniversary of running through the five boroughs, with more than 60,000 finishers expected this year.

It was the final Abbott World Marathon Major of the year. Conditions were chilly and sunny throughout the day. The marathon had a five-year stint, from 1971-75, with four loops in Central Park before switching to its current format. Runners begin on Staten Island at Fort Wadsworth and cross the Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. From there, amid cheering fans throughout, they wind and weave through the streets before finishing in Central Park.

Andreas Almgren of Sweden won in 2:06:01 in his marathon debut. Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the women’s title, finishing in 2:24:36. Jessica McClain was second and the top American female, in 2:24:42. She was the first American woman to make the podium since 2018. Nine American women were among the top 15.

Huntsville native Ryan Ford was 10th overall and the third American male, finishing in 2:07:17. Eight Americans were among the top 20.
