Gear We Love: Honey Stinger Nut + Seed Bars

Honey Stinger

Honey Stinger is on a mission to make recovery both tastier and more effective. The new Honey Stinger Nut + Seed Bar features a nut-butter filling covered in caramel and rolled in crunchy nuts and seeds. The result? A protein-packed, post-exercise snack that tastes like a treat.

Nut + Seed Bars are loaded with 14 grams of protein and 25 percent of the daily recommended value of antioxidants Vitamins A, C, and E. The bars help provide the fuel athletes need to help rebuild muscle and fight inflammatory responses.

“Sports nutrition studies confirm that macronutrient timing is critical to an athlete’s recovery,” said Wendy Mayo, Vice President of Marketing at Honey Stinger. “The best time to stimulate muscle repair is about 30 to 45 minutes post-exercise.

“We want to make recovery nutrition as easy and enjoyable as possible with a bar that not only tastes great, but also has protein, carbs, and healthy fat to support an athlete’s muscles when they demand it most,” Mayo added.

The new Nut+ Seed Bar is available in two flavors: Peanut Sunflower Seed and Almond Pumpkin Seed. Both flavors are made with True Source Certified Honey, are non-GMO and gluten-free.

The Tasty Lowdown

The TVO Team recently got their hands on a few of the new Honey Stinger Nut + Seed Bar in both flavors – Peanut Sunflower Seed and Almond Pumpkin Seed. The bars were nutty, tasty and not too sweet. At 260 calories, it is a bit heavier than some bars, but the Honey Stinger calories were delectable ones. And you’re not using it to replace meals; you’re using it for a burst of energy while active. All said and done, this is a bar that you should consider adding to your rotation in your active lifestyle.

“It’s a sturdy bar that holds up being tossed around in a bag or pocket,” said TVO Team taster Rhiannon. “The bar is easy to chew and doesn’t stick to your teeth. It’s sweet, like honey sweet, but not overpowering. The nuts and seeds give it a good crunchy texture. No bad aftertaste.

“I was surprised; I actually liked the Peanut Sunflower Seed bar better than the Almond Pumpkin Seed,” Rhiannon added. “Usually, I like almonds better than peanuts. Either way, it’s a good snacking bar for any time as far as I’m concerned.”

Where Does Honey Stinger Get Its Energy?

Energy in Honey Stinger products comes from carbohydrates and honey. Honey is a natural sugar and lower on the glycemic index than refined sugar. The glycemic index of foods refers to how quickly and how high blood sugar (glucose) increases in comparison to pure glucose. Honey is a mix of simple sugars: glucose and fructose (there are others but in smaller proportions). Sucrose is comprised of glucose and fructose joined together. Our bodies need to break down glucose and fructose before they can be used, which takes time. In honey, the glucose and fructose molecules are not joined so they can be used immediately.

Honey Stinger products also include sodium, potassium, and magnesium. These vital electrolytes keep your muscles functioning while minimizing cramping associated with intense exercise.

What About Caffeine?

Honey Stinger’s Strawberry Kiwi Gels contain 32 milligrams (mg) of caffeine (per individual packet) derived from green tea extract. Their Performance Chews contain 75 milligrams of caffeine derived from white tea extract. Rapid Hydration Mixes leverage Guayusa extract for 50 mg of caffeine to help sustain energy levels without the jitters.

Gluten Free?

Who Can Enjoy Nut + Seed Bars?

Honey Stinger uses honey as a sweetener in their products. Honey has the same glucose to fructose ratio of fruit, 1:1. If you can eat fruit without getting an upset stomach, you should be able to eat Honey Stinger without any problems.

All Honey Stinger products are made from natural ingredients, so they can be snacks for children over the age of one. Honey Stinger advises caution in giving their naturally caffeinated products to children.

Grab Your Own

The bars retail for $30.99 for a box of 12, and athletes or casual snackers can try both flavors with a sample pack retailing for $10.99 at HoneyStinger.com.
