Alabama Finishers in the TCS 2024 New York City Marathon

Frank Matte topped the field of Alabama finishers in the TCS 2024 New York City Marathon, which attracted more than 55,500 runners from around the world.

Matte, 35, of Birmingham, finished in 2:32:24, a pace of 5:49 per mile. He was 166th overall in the field.

The 104 runners from Alabama with official finishes ranged from Matte’s time to a 20-minute pace. Runners primarily were from the Huntsville, Birmingham and Mobile areas. Several are repeat finishers from last year.

Ryan Ford, a former Huntsville runner and Westminster Christian Academy graduate, ran 2:11:08 and finished 11th overall in his marathon debut. He was fourth among U.S. finishers. Ford is a former Huntsville Track Club scholarship recipient. He lives near Boone, N.C., and is a member of the ZAP Endurance team.

More than 55,000 finished this year’s New York City Marathon, one of the “Big 6” majors in the world. That expands to seven next year with the addition of the Sydney Marathon. The others are Chicago, Tokyo, London, Boston and Berlin.

The New York event began in 1970 with runners making four (plus a little more) loops in Central Park. In 1976 it expanded into the five boroughs. Runners toodle through all five NYC boroughs as thousands of spectators offer encouragement along the way.

The New York City marathon route begins on Staten Island, with runners first crossing the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. They make their way north through myriad neighborhoods into Queens before crossing the Queensboro Bridge into upper Manhattan. As relatively close as runners are to the finish at Central Park, they’re not done. They head north again for a 1.5-mile jiggle into the Bronx. Then, it’s a turn south back into Manhattan and into Central Park, finishing at Central Park West and 67th.
