Cornett Smashes Sub-17 for Running of the Bulls 5K Win

Josh Cornett was smoking Saturday morning on the Big Cove Greenway, pushing hard with a couple of goals in mind at the Running of the Bulls 5K.

One goal was to win the annual August sweatfest that attracts several hundred runners and benefits the Hampton Cove Middle School. The other goal was to finish the race in less than 17 minutes, which would be about a 5:25-ish pace. Unless something weird happened, achieving the latter might mean accomplishing the former.

Cornett, 31, of Madison, did both, finishing in 16:50 and winning the race by 32 seconds. Dylan Glass, 33, of Huntsville, was second in 17:20, within shouting distance of his Return2Sport partner but far enough back to not catch up. Cornett was in another gear Saturday morning.

David Guzik, 54, of Fairfield, Conn., was third in 17:32.

Keenan Carter, 14, of Owens Cross Roads, won the women’s title in 19:56. She was 14th overall. Grace Drown, 16, of Huntsville, was second (18th) in 20:20, and Emma Lee Elmore, 17, of Huntsville, was third (21st, in 20:27.

Julia Donovan, 40, of Huntsville, won the Masters Women’s title in 21:28. She was 42nd overall. Ryan Donovan, 40, of Huntsville, won the Masters Men’s title in 18:43. He was seventh.

The 5K field had almost 470 official finishers. The race was sponsored by Fleet Feet, Dunkin’ Donuts, Swift Recovery, Food City and Return2Sport.
