Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival Casts its Line in West Virginia

THOMAS, W. Va. — The inaugural Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival will celebrate the region’s beauty and fly fishing in one of the nation’s most scenic states.

The event is May 31-June 2. Organizers hope to attract enthusiasts and novices for a weekend of activities, education and community spirit.

Tyler M. Waldo and Robby McClung created the festival. Both are fly fishing enthusiasts. It will showcase the beauty of fly fishing, strengthen the community among fly fishing enthusiasts, and promote conservation through education. Newcomers of all ages are welcome.

Waldo is a native of Upshur County and currently resides in Canaan Valley. McClung is from Elkins, W. Va., and now lives in Davis. Their shared enthusiasm for fly fishing and the natural beauty of West Virginia sparked the creation of the festival.

The event kicks off on Friday with a meet and greet. Saturday and Sunday include free public access to fishing demonstrations, vendor exhibitions, food and crafts. A special ticketed dinner Saturday evening will feature guest speakers and a charity raffle.

Endorsements have come from the Mountaineer Chapter of Trout Unlimited, P. Pendleton Chapter of Trout Unlimited, WVDEP Save Our Streams, Natives Fly Shop and The Mayfly Project.

“I’m excited to offer this opportunity to not only learn to fly fish, but also to appreciate the resources where I live and love,” Waldo said.

McClung echoed this enthusiasm, saying, “I’m excited for having a reason to fish, to share one of my passions with others, and hopefully to inspire new anglers.”
