Sunset Bicycles will open April 1 as Huntsville’s newest bike shop, but it’s not new.
Confused? Don’t be. Sunset Bicycles is transitioning from the well-known Blevins Bicycle Company, which closed March 25. Owner Matthew Blevins made the following announcement on Facebook.
There has been a rumor floating around that I need to clear up. After nearly 11 years, I’m stepping down as owner of Blevins Bicycle Company. This is a decision I’ve been throwing around for a few years now and the timing was finally right to pull the trigger. There are a number of personal reasons I’ve made this decision that aren’t really worth going into. I can’t even begin to explain just how grateful I am for every single person that has supported the shop over the years. There’s no way we could have been so successful without the support and love the we received from everyone. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.
Blevins Bicycle Co. has been a huge part of my life but it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life and I’m truly exited to see what the future holds. I love each and every one of our customers and I know I’m going to miss every single one of you. Just so you know, the shop isn’t going anywhere. It’s being left in good hands and there are some exciting things coming in the near future. Thank you for making my dream of owing a bicycle shop come true. Now it’s time for me to chase another dream in another town. Thanks again for all of your love and support over the last decade. This is an emotional time for me but I’m excited to see what lies ahead. I love all of you and couldn’t have done it without you.
Love, Matthew B.
The announcement was met with a host of well-wishes and accolades. The shop has been a solid contributor to the local biking scene for 11 years. Blevins did not indicate what his next life chapter will be. The announcement also was made on the Blevins Bicycle Company website, which otherwise has been scrubbed of information on its pages.
Sunset Bicycles Up Next!
Sunset Bicycles will open April 1, owned by Brandon Welch and Brandon Pinke. They are amid a whirlwind of work refurbing the shop and getting all the business to-do lists completed.
Welch told Tennessee Valley Outsider that he and Pinke “are currently knee deep in a store remodel with our team and hope to reopen on April 1. No fooling! He and I are very excited to bring our passion, experience and vision for the cycling community in this area.”
Welch described Sunset Bicycles as Huntsville’s “newest and most experienced bike shop.” The shop’s website, which is under construction, says “We are working hard to incorporate parts of our past to launch us into a new era to inspire even more people to get on a bike and enjoy life.”
We’ll have more about this new-old bike shop in the future. Stay tuned.
