A flat course and calm conditions provided the stage for a near-photo finish in the Boston or Bust half-marathon Sunday morning at Ditto Landing in Huntsville.
Cody Parker, 27, won the race in a speedy time of 1:28:48:53, nipping Glen Anderson, 32, who crossed in 1:28:58:72. Emilio Zipf, 22, was third in 1:30:05.
Kathleen Coffee, 27, was the first female (4th overall) in 1:31:50. Nicole Delozer, 26, was second (6th) in 1:39:39, and Maddie Gosett, 19, was third (13th) in 1:49:30.
The event was staged by Running Lane Events as part of a three-race celebration of and last-chance qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The Boston qualifier registration window is Sept. 12-16, so the Boston or Bust run was a final shot to get in.
The loop route took runners from Ditto Landing by the Tennessee River along the Aldridge Creek Greenway up through south Huntsville and back. The concrete course is flat, lending to fast times. Conditions at the start included comfortable temperatures and overcast skies that deteriorated as a thunderstorm moved in about 7:30 or so. It began pouring rain a little after 8 a.m., and dissipated the creepy no-wind-it’s-too-quiet feeling.
