HUNTSVILLE — With a berth in the famed Boston Marathon on the line, David Too cruised to the win Sept. 9 at the Boston or Bust marathon at Ditto Landing.
Too sped to a winning time of 2:29:28.63 at the second annual qualifying marathon put on by Running Lane Events. The field, along with those of a half-marathon and 5K, started at Ditto Landing. Marathoners headed out first, through the marina parking lot and onto the flat, fast Aldridge Creek Greenway. The half and 5K fields followed. The popular concrete greenway parallels the creek that provides its name, a ribbon through south Huntsville.
Too competed collegiately at Florida A&M and then Iowa State University. He earned multiple MEAC, Big 12 conference and All-America honors during his time at both universities. In 2019-20, Too helped Iowa State to fourth place at the NCAA Championship. It was the Cyclones’ best finish in the last 25 years.
Alan Ash was second in 2:38:55, and Kevin Betts was third in 2:40:40. Betts won the inaugural event last year.
Jill Dennes was fourth in 2:55:19, claiming the top women’s spot and easily qualifying for Boston. Runners have specific times based on age groups to qualify for the annual spring race in Beantown.
Anayell Jaimes was second female (11th overall) in 3:06:05. Phoebe Bauer was third (19th) in 3:17:27.
The marathon had 101 finishers. Ages ranged from 18-70, with several runners coming from other states in one of the last qualifying events before registration opened Sept. 11-15.
