Checking out new beverages always is fun. This week’s Brew We Love is the Hazy Jane IPA from BrewDog brewery in Columbus, Ohio. That’s home of the Ohio State Buckeyes, some terrible traffic on the interstates in the state capitol, and a pretty hip brewery downtown.
When the run is over and you reach in the cooler, we recommend that you enjoy whatever beverage you want to tipple. Water, non-alcoholic, vegan, soda, a hard cider, hoppy IPA or nice lager. Whatever. We’re cool with it. Some days for us it might be a cold beer. Other, just the lukewarm water in the back seat because we forgot to bring the cooler.
Hazy Jane IPA slams you with taste at first sip. It’s a bit chewy to me, or what maybe some might call sticky. It tastes good and has a nice finish. Despite three malts and four hops – Cascade, Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe – it doesn’t blow your head off with that “OMG!’ whank of some IPAs. It’s unfiltered, thus the name, and according to BrewDog has “notes of pineapple, mango, stone fruit and a hint of tangerine to mix it up.” It’s just enough fruit to taste but not overpowering by any means. Hazy Jane IPA has a 7.2% ABV.
BrewDog started in 2007 with Punk IPA. Dang ol’ punks! It struck a nerve, though, and things took off. It offers about two dozen alcoholic beers and a handful of non-alcoholic. We’ll have some more reviews of BrewDog bevs in the future.
