Chota Canoe Club Offers Whitewater Classes

Whitewater Canoe, Kayak Classes

The Chota Canoe Club’s Annual Paddle School is offering whitewater classes for beginner and intermediate paddlers this weekend. The classes are a great way to get started paddling or to advance your skills as a paddler. This year’s school will take place on the Pigeon River in Hartford, Tenn., June 10-12. The attendees will be camping at Fox Fire Riverside Campground, located at 3541 Hartford Road, Hartford.

Classes for Beginners

The beginner whitewater kayak class will take place on the Lower Pigeon River (Class I-II) and will cover basic boating and safety skills.  Beginner whitewater classes are suitable for those who have never been in a whitewater kayak. Also, it’s for those who want to shake the winter cobwebs off in preparation for a summer of great kayaking. Additionally, the class will cover a review of the equipment and how to outfit your boat to fit you best. Then the class will head to flatwater for a review of how to safely wet-exit your boat, use basic paddle strokes, and be on the water safely. At the instructor’s discretion, the class will then pack up and head to the river for some fun whitewater on the Pigeon River. Instructors will tailor the class to meet the skill levels and abilities of the students in the class.

Intermediate Whitewater Classes

The intermediate whitewater kayak class will take place on the Lower Pigeon River (Class I-II) or Upper Pigeon River (Class II-III+). It will cover more advanced boating and skills. Intermediate whitewater classes are suitable for paddlers who have a reliable combat roll, and solid class II+ river-running experience. Also, the class will focus on river reading, advanced paddle strokes, group safety, and stepping up to the Upper Pigeon River. Instructors will tailor the class to meet the skill levels and abilities of the students in the class.
