Discover Your Greenways: New Series to Showcase Area’s Fun Paths

Discover Your Greenways, a new weekly series from We Run Huntsville, begins Monday at Ditto Landing to kick off the summer with fun events for everyone.

The events are designed to showcase greenways in Huntsville and Madison, encourge active lifestyles and help people meet others with similar interests. Runners and walkers of all paces are encouraged to attend. Options for 5-, 3- and 1-mile distances will be marked.

Attendees will have a chance to win free shoes from New Balance Huntsville or First Place Athletics. NesinFit therapy is providing limited tee-shirts, and other partners are providing support.

Events begin at 5:30 p.m. Locations and other information will be updated as needed, and can be found on the WRH Facebook page.

The first Discover Your Greenways event is June 5 at Ditto Landing. WRH founder Gregg Gelmis said attendees should meet at Ditto Landing at the pavilion on the river. The route will be along the river to the Redstone Arsenal fence and back to the pavilion. The route is crushed grave;. TVA is not allowing blacktop due to historical remains in the area.

Other upcoming greenway visits include in Madison, downtown Huntsville and Hampton Cove. The City of Huntsville currently offers about 75 miles of greenways. More are budgeted for construction, with a greenway master plan envisioning more than 310 miles in the city.

Madison has six public, popular greenways or trails. Mill Creek, Rainbow Mountain, Indian Creek, Bradford Creek, Beaverdam Swamp and the Dublin Park Walking Path all offer different distances. Bradford Creek hosted the 2022 Big Run, which returns there again this year.

The greenways provide myriad activities including running, biking, birding, walking and more.
