About 50 walkers and runners enjoyed the first Discover Your Greenways evening Monday night at Ditto Landing.
The event is designed to help people get out and enjoy the local greenways. Those at Ditto Landing included a wide variety of ages, from young children in strollers and rambunctious, eager kiddos to adults knocking out a 5K or easy walk.
The series is put on by Gregg Gelmis and We Run Huntsville / We Walk Huntsville. Gelmis is known for his WRH photography at many local events. He said he created the series to encourage people to get outside and be active, along with showcasing the city’s 75-plus miles of greenways.
Among the series partners are REI Co-Op, New Balance Huntsville, First Place Athletics, NesinFit and others. Gelmis will be giving away goodies each week including race entries to Racing Rivals triathlon and 43rd Huntsvlle Sprint Tri, courtesy of the Team Rocket Tri-Club.
Monday evening’s event saw participants leave Ditto Landing, go west under the U.S. 431 Whitesburg Bridge and follow the river path. The out-and-back totaled 1, 3 or 5 miles, depending on what each person wanted to do. It was, as expected, hot and humid; but those who attended said they enjoyed seeing a new greenway and getting out.
The June 12 Discover Your Greenways event will be on Bradford Creek Greenway in Madison, based at Heritage Elementary School. Gelmis plans each month to rotate the Monday evening events in south Huntsville, Madison, Huntsville and Hampton Cove.
