Brandon York smoked the downtown route and field Tuesday morning for an easy win in the Freedom 5K in Huntsville.
York, 38, of Madison, won in 14:49, cruising at a 4:46-minute pace. York is familiar with the winner’s podium and a top contender for any event he’s in.
The field of 388 started on Church Street in front of the Huntsville Museum of Art. Runners represented 16 states including Washingon, Minnesota, Utah, Texas, New Jersey, Ohio and others. They looped through Old Huntsville and finished at Big Spring Park. The 5K and Independence Mile courses were USATF-certified. Only a couple of slight inclines were testy. Cloud cover provided a bit of relief despite high humidity.
Joe Farrand, 31, of Orlando, was second in 15:28 and Grattan O’Neill, 16, of Huntsville, was third in 16:22.
Samantha Menikheim, 17, of Madison, won the women’s title in 19:12. She was 16th overall. Anna Pierce, 17, of Huntsville, was second (19th) in 19:27, and Cynthia Gudatis, 18, of Hilton Head, S.C., was third (29th) in 20:23.
Roberta Hauck, 56, won the Women’s Masters title in 23:23. David Bains, 41, won the Men’s Master’s in 19:12.
