Latinos Run Celebration Features Fun, Food

About 50 runners celebrated the Latinos Run Hispanic Heritage Month with a fun run and post-run meal Thursday evening at Fleet Feet in Huntsville.

Runners met at Fleet Feet in Jones Valley for the fun run, which was three or five miles long. Runners did a 1-mile warmup, then went through Jones Park to Hickory Hill Drive, Sherwood Drive, Atwood Linear Park Greenway and back to the store. Temperatures were perfect for the sunset run, with a bit of a breeze.

Back at Fleet Feet, a super spread of food prepared by local runner Perla Núñez was ready for everyone: rice, beans, salad, mixed meat including steak, bacon, turkey, ham and onion, salsa, tomatillo salsa, crema, chips and a nopales salad with pico de gallo. Margaritas, non-alcoholic margaritas and non-alcoholic Cerveza Atletica beer from Athletic Brewing was available. Little was left after seconds, and probably some thirds, were plated. The consensus was that Núñez should be in charge of weekly fun run meals.

What is Latinos Run?

The event was part of Latinos Run, which serves “a global Latinx audience of over 25,000 runners from beginners to elite athletes. These are runners who are passionate about living a healthier life. As a minority-based organization, Latinos Run has opened the door to highlight a community that largely is ignored in the health and fitness industry. Their goal is to inspire more individuals of color to change the way the fitness industry looks, celebrate diversity and empower others to get inspired by the journey.

Runners can participate in a virtual 5K from Oct. 15 to Sept. 15, submit times and receive a shirt and very cool, distinctive medal. No times were kept for the fun run. Everyone could go at their own pace, and did, and from all appearances everyone had a good time.
