A hearty crew of joyful runners left Fleet Feet for a 3-mile fun run Monday evening to celebrate the Latinos Run Hispanic Heritage Month.
Runners met at Fleet Feet in Jones Valley for the fun run, which wound through Jones Park, down Hickory Hill and onto Sherwood Drive. From there, the crew hit the city Atwood Linear Park Greenway to return to the park and store. About 40-50 people participated.
Back at Fleet Feet, a super spread of food prepared by local runner Perla Núñez was ready for everyone: rice, beans, salad, mixed meat including steak, bacon, turkey, ham and onion, salsa, tomatillo salsa, crema, chips and more. She laid out a similar spread last year that was enjoyed by all.
There were no timing chips, starting or finish lines, or awards. This was all in fun, to have a good time and celebrate. Brooks Running provided shoes for testing, with many giving them a go. Functional Chiropractic also was on hand to offer advice and information. Fleet Fitness provided a free 30-minute HITT workout in the parking lot before the event, too.
What is Latinos Run?
The event was part of Latinos Run, which serves “a global Latinx audience of over 25,000 runners from beginners to elite athletes. These are runners who are passionate about living a healthier life. As a minority-based organization, Latinos Run has opened the door to highlight a community that largely is ignored in the health and fitness industry. Their goal is to inspire more individuals of color to change the way the fitness industry looks, celebrate diversity and empower others to get inspired by the journey.”
Runners can participate in a virtual 5K from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, submit times and receive a shirt and very cool, distinctive medal. Latinos Run partners include Brooks, New Balance, Asics, Hoka and On.
