With cool temps and anticipation of a speedy track through downtown Huntsville, 325 runners finished the Free 2 Teach Paper Chase 5K Saturday morning.
Sponsors, donors, runners and others raised $49,064 for area teachers and students through the Free 2 Teach program. More than 400 signed up for the event. Teachers may shop at the Free 2 Teach store, which provides free supplies to all full-time classroom teachers in Madison County’s three public school systems: Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County.
In 11 years, Free 2 Teach has reached more than 3,900 teachers and 54,000 students thanks to more than $10 million in donated money and resources. Free 2 Teach is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax-deductible.
Anthony Kosinski, 19, of Madison, crossed the line first in 18:09. Michael Kitchen, 18, of Madison, was second in 18:34, and JD Shattuck, 14, of Huntsville, was third in 20:09.
Holly Sillivant, 20, of Huntsville, won the women’s title and was 10th overall in a time of 21:55. Perla Nunez, 41, of Huntsville, was second (14th) in 23:39, and Amanda Salazar, 41, of Meridianville, was third (17th) in 24:13.
The Paper Chase route typically is a speedy course, taking runners from Constitution Village through downtown past Courthouse Square. It includes a nice series of gentle hills along with scenic views of some of the city’s oldest homes.
