The final half mile or so of Saturday morning’s fun Von Braun Center Music Run 5K led the field along quiet streets, from Old Huntsville neighborhoods back downtown.
Runners with the finish in grasp toodled along Williams Avenue past the Huntsville Museum of Art and Big Spring Park’s big dinosaur ribcage artwork by the lake. They turned into the VBC complex, past Thrasher Memorial Fountain, Propst Arena and the South Hall, then behind and around the VBC for the final turn at the North Hall and Mars Music Hall.
It’s a relatively flat route, with streets familiar to most who do other local events: Walker, White, Randolph, Greene and Williams. Wildly runnable for the up-front speedsters dashing past “Oh, there’s a run today?” porch-sitters on their first mug of coffee. Lovely and enjoyable for the rest of the field who appreciate the “no hills, chill vibes” morning.
Flashy Finish
Nathaniel Pierce of Huntsville led the speed crew around the course, barreling around the final turn of the VBC for the win. Pierce crossed in 16:56, a pace of 5:27 per mile. Erick Kigen was second in 17:12, and Myles Scarano third in 17:16.
Right behind was Alana Scarano, taking top women’s honors and fourth place in 17:58. Hunter Hardman was fifth in 18:08. The top 12 finished in less than 21 minutes. The top 43 finished in less than 25 minutes.
Kristin Sullins of Huntsville claimed Masters Women honors, finishing 44th in 25:02. She also won the Masters division at the recent Wild Thangs Chupacabra trail half at Monte Sano, in 3:04. Michael Brown of Huntsville took Masters Men honors, finishing sixth in 18:25.
The Music Run 5K is part of the VBC’s 50th anniversary celebration and leads into Huntsville Music Month. Runners were treated to live music on the course from Brandon Elder, Charles and Tanya Harris, Josh Allison and Morgan Sloan & Tunie the Tune Bus.
At the finish inside Mars Music Hall, more live music was provided by Juice thanks to Lee & Company.
