One of Huntsville’s most popular races, the Pill Hill 10K, returns to the Rocket City this weekend after almost two decades.
The race hasn’t been held since 2003. For whatever reason, it went away after several years of lore as perhaps the toughest 10K in the region. Pill Hill is the name of part of Huntsville where several doctors live, and have lived in days gone by. Doctors, pills … thus, the alliterative name Pill Hill. Large, beautiful homes and hilly streets make for a nice 10K with some lovely scenery.
As race director Kelly Cleary says, it will be one of the toughest 10K races around. Registration still is open and if you’re wanting a fun, tough event, this is one to jump into. Plus, it’s the return of a legend. How often do you get to do that?
The race will be staged in the Greenwyche pool neighborhood “utilizing all of the great hills around the Drake and Garth Road intersection.” if you’re unfamiliar with Huntsville this is on the western side of Huntsville Mountain. It will be hilly, but has some long stretches where you can unwind your legs.
Proceeds will help the Huntsville Police Department Citizens Foundation Fund. The fund supports families of fallen officers, officers in need of medical or mental health issues, and the HPD Memorial. The goal of the Pill Hill 10K is to raise community awareness of the issues officers face on a daily basis in the line of duty and impacts on their mental health.
