HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The temperature hovered at 33 degrees at the 8 a.m. start of Saturday’s Frozen Goat 4-mile run at Monte Sano State Park. The cold temps and wind didn’t deter a field of participants from taking to the trails and a crowd of spectators from gathering for the races that included a 4-miler, 15K and 30K and was named after a herd of goats that may or may not exist.
“Believe it or not, there used to be a herd of about 10 goats that roamed the Monte Sano State Park for years,” said RunningLane’s Sean Allen. “For those who have never seen the goats, it’s hard for them to believe that there was actually a pack of goats that roamed the mountain. But there was, and you could smell them before you saw them. Nobody has seen them in about 10 years, but they did in fact exist for some time.”
No goats were reported out and about Saturday morning, but 17-year-old Cole Robinson was spotted first at the finish line of the 4-mile event and posted a time of 32:16 to claim the overall title. Twelve-year-old Charlie Lehr was second with a time of 36:18 and Benjamin Knox, 24, posted third at 39:46.
Auburn Cohan, 24, cruised to the women’s title in 44:46. She was 10th overall. Not far behind in second place was Audrey Spillers, 12, 45:43 (14th overall), and Erin McMahon, 36, was third at 46:14 (16th overall).
