McDowell Trails Association is inviting cyclists to experience the inaugural Rock n Roller Metric Century cycling event on April 23 in Old Fort, North Carolina. The 65- and 21-mile bike rides start and finish in front of the Kitsbow Old Fort Ride House. Both routes showcase the special roads that make McDowell County a cycling destination. Funds raised by the Rock n Roller Metric Century will be used by the McDowell Trails Association to plan, develop, build, and provide education and support for greenways, blueways, and trails in McDowell County.
Rock n Roller attendees will be able to take advantage of the Old Fort Ride House amenities (water, snacks, bathroom, and changing rooms). Riders can have their bike tuned up for last-minute event needs by the bike shop located inside the Ride House, Schoenouer Service Course. Kitsbow Cycling Apparel, the makers of premium cycling apparel who moved their headquarters to Old Fort in 2019, is a sponsor of the event.
“This race is going to start and finish right outside of our factory door and highlights some of our favorite routes with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains,” said Katherine Ehrlichman, manager of community activities. “This kind of event further supports one of the many reasons that Kitsbow decided to move to this area: great riding for our employees and customers right here in Old Fort.”
Rock n Roller Highlights Scenery
The rolling hills and climbs on the 65-mile Hard Rock route are the perfect way to kick off the spring riding season. Riders will be greeted by stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Grandfather Ranger District of the Pisgah National Forest.
The shorter 21-mile Soft Rock ride is designed to be a perfect experience for new cyclists who want to test their skills in an organized cycling event. Riders of both routes can add on 10 additional miles by riding to Andrews Geyser, an optional out-and-back from the finish area.
Riders can register at RaceRoster.com. Participation in the event will include food (near the start/finish), Hillman beer, and a T-shirt. Come see the revitalization of downtown Old Fort where businesses and organizations like People on the Move for Old Fort, the G5 Trail Collective, US Forest Service, McDowell Technical Community College, Hillman Beer, and Kitsbow Cycling Apparel are leading economic growth.
