Erick Kigen won going away and Hawley Cheney edged her closest competitor Saturday morning in the Rocket City Marathon 10K.
Runners were greeted in front of the Von Braun Center at the start with battleship gray skies and unexpected wind gusts to 20 miles per hour. The gusts were strong enough that the Huntsville Track Club inflatable arch couldn’t be used for the race or the 5K race two hours later. The race saw 426 finishers out of 500 registered.
Kigen, 36, of Huntsville, finished in 36:20, winning by almost three minutes. Isaiah Jewett of Starkville, Miss., was second in 39:03, and Christopher Kitson of Huntsville was third in 39:22.
Cheney, 33, of Winchester, Tenn., cinched the women’s title in 43:17. She was eighth overall and just a tad faster than her closest pursuer. Julie Croushorn of Birmingham was second (9th) in 43:42. Rachel Sneed of Owens Cross Roads was third (11th) in 44:25.
Andrew Lindsey, 41, of Huntsville, won the Male Masters title in 42:14. Croushorn won the Women’s Masters division.
