Josh Martinez of Knoxville and Linda Scavarda of Meridianville claimed top honors in the Rocket City Marathon Mural 5K on Saturday.
Martinez, 16, led a trio of teenagers to the finish line, crossing in 19:34 to take the win. Willie Martinez, 14, trailed a smidge and finished second in 20:10. Adian Ennis, 13, of Athens, was third, in 20:21.
Scavarda, 40, was eighth overall and took the top women’s spot with a time of 22:55. Kelly Ingham, 46, of Whitefish, Mont., was second (15th) in 23:53. Linda Bowen, 43, of Birmingham, was third (23rd) in 25:32.
The field of 321 finishers had cloudy skies and a bit of humidity. Forecasted rain held off for the morning 10K, 5K and kids’ events. Runners came from more than two dozen states including California, Washington, Montana, Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York and throughout the Southeast.
The 5K began in front of the Von Braun Center and wound through parts of Old Town, downtown and back to the VBC South Hall finish and expo. Runners were treated to many of the downtown murals on the route, along with the annual tinsel trail along the Big Spring canal and park.
The RCM is put on by the Huntsville Track Club and presented by the Huntsville Sports Commission.
