Alex Shaw and Felica Stevens coasted to easy wins Saturday morning in the Rocket City Marathon Mural 5k in downtown Huntsville.
Shaw, 23, of Raleigh, N.C., carried a 5:31 pace over the course to finish in 17:06. He won by more than two minutes.
Josh Martinez of Knoxville was second in 19:12, and Jonatan Diaz of Baileyton was third in 19:25. Lucas Mould of Athens finished fourth in 19:56, and Keerthan Singireddy of Madison took fifth in 20:59.
Stevens, 43, of Ashland, Ky., claimed the women’s title in 22:24. She finished 14th overall, and also was the Women’s Masters winner. Megan Light of Arab was second (25th) in 23:53. Cynthia Mitchell of Athens was third (31st) in 24:24 and second Women’s Masters, Rachel Evans of Meridianville fourth (32nd) in 24:26, and Harper Debolt of Huntsville was fifth (34th) in 24:43.
The field of 417 official finishers, out of a full 502 registered, saw 234 females and 183 males. The field carried an average pace of 12:21. Both winners were a smidge faster than the 2023 winners. The 5K race is one of two, along with the 10K, on Saturday, to kick off Rocket City Marathon race weekend. It started in front of the Von Braun Center and wound through downtown, past some of the city’s oldest churches, through the Huntsville Depot Museum, the tinsel trail and Big Spring Park back to the VBC.
Gerard Tamez, 63, of New Market, took top honors in the Men’s Masters division. He finished in 21:07.
