The annual Rocket City Marathon has again been voted No. 1 in Alabama by runners who appreciate the course and scenery.
Votes compiled by RaceRaves.com put Huntsville’s marathon atop the list again. It was No. 1 in 2023, but for 49 years has been a favorite among runners nationwide. The marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K and 1-mile Family Run/Walk are put on by the Huntsville Track Club and managed by Kinda Gritty.
This year’s RCM Weekend is Dec. 12-14, with everything based at the Von Braun Center South Hall. The expo and bib pickup will start there on Dec. 12. The 10K, 5K and 1-miler will be Saturday morning, along with expo and bib pickup all day. The marathon and half-marathon will be Sunday morning. All races begin in front of the Von Braun Center and end inside the South Hall.
Registration is still open, and this year’s fields already are breaking records with weeks to go. Huntsville Track Club has partnered this year with the Huntsville Hospital Pediatric Department, with a donation from RCM proceeds benefitting a new outdoor wellness center.
About the Ranking
RaceRaves compiles votes and comments from runners for its annual “best” lists of marathons and half-marathons.
About the Rocket City Marathon, it said: “Huntsville is a stellar venue from which to launch your next personal best or Boston Qualifying mission. The winding course provides a scenic tour of the city’s historical neighborhoods as well as the Botanical Gardens and U.S. Space and Rocket Center where runners pass an authentic, full-scale Saturn V rocket, one of only three in the world. Impeccable course markings and exceptional support ensure your focus remains on running. A finish inside the climate-controlled Von Braun Center promises a smooth landing in unpredictable December weather. Rocket City will give you the boost(er) you need to end your racing year on the right foot.“
Runner-up was the Big Beach Marathon in January in Gulf Shores. The top half-marathon in Alabama is the War Eagle Run Fest Half, in late February. It takes runners from Jordan-Hare Stadium through Auburn, around the Hutsell-Rosen Track, and into the stadium for a finish at the 50 yard line with Aubie.
