MOORESVILLE, Ala. — Five Alabama age group records were set and Josh Whitehead defended his title Saturday morning in the Rocket Run 10-Miler.
Whitehead, 45, of Madison, was among the record crew as he easily won in 53:37, a 5:22 pace. He was comfortable throughout, taking an early lead and never letting up. Whitehead won by more than five minutes and broke his own record (54:34) set during a 2023 race in Pelham.
Other records set Saturday, two by mere fractions of a second:
— Athan O’Neill, 15, Huntsville, 1:02:24, (previous record, 1:03:40)
— John Glidewell, 67, Athens, 1:05:10, (1:09:07)
— Angel Mobley, 28, Huntsville, 1:10:02, (1:03:08)
— Elaine Sillivant, 63, Huntsville, 1:28:09, (1:28:11)
O’Neill’s record smashed one set in 2002 Records set by Mobley, Sillivant and Glidewell toppled those held since 2009. New entries will be updated on the state records lists.
More than 200 runners found cloudy conditions with a slight northwest breeze for the 8 a.m. start at the Old Brick Church in historic Mooresville. Huntsville Track Club hosts the annual event. The course is certified.
Mobley captured the women’s title, finishing eighth overall. Nina Sillivant, 29, of Huntsville, was second (12th) in 1:06:04, and Julia Donovan, 39, of Huntsville was third (22nd) in 1:10:07.
Daniel Sillivant, 37, of Huntsville, was runner-up to Whitehead in 58:10. Patrick Mills, 31, of Huntsville, was third in 58:56.
Janie Mena, 40, of Gurley, won the women’s Masters division in 1:16:23, and Shaun Tompkins, 41, of Madison, claimed the men’s Master’s in 1:02:25.
The field had 204 official finishers, from ages 14-78.
