Bryce McCleary of Hazel Green and Anna Pierce with RunningLane won the boys and girls Run Dirty for Donuts 2-mile titles Aug. 12 at John Hunt Park.
The preseason prep blowout underwent an overnight change due to heavy rains in the area. Originally scheduled for the park’s grass cross-country course, it had to be moved to the rubber track on short notice. City officials and race organizers talked throughout the week about options. The best one, on short notice, was to avoid the newly-sodded course still growing in and use the rubber track. Route distances were checked, volunteers and racers notified and things were good to go.
The middle- and high-school athletes from 12 schools showed out with strong times on a humid morning. The track runs alongside much of the grass cross-country course, one of the best in the state and host for prep and NCAA events.
Pierce, sporting the Running Lane colors, won the girls’ title in 11:42, 13 seconds ahead of her closest pursuer. The girls’ event had 92 competitors. McCleary, of Hazel Green, topped the boys’ field of 182 runners in a time of 9:27:58, winning by more than 20 seconds.

This event is free to the high school athletes and, thus, they do not register by name. They just had to pin on a bib. Therefore, only the bib numbers are associated with finishes in the standings.
