DECATUR — Stuart Lamp and Whitney Hackney took top honors at the Spirit of America 5-Mile run Saturday morning at Point Mallard Park.
Proceeds benefited the Community Free Clinic. The event has a storied history, with records dating back 20 years on the River City Runners site. The course started near the T.C. Almon Center at the park, looped a ball field, skirted the golf course and then followed a trail along the Tennessee River.
Lamp, of Decatur, scored his first Spirit win in 29:52, adding to several Top 5 finishes. Vicente Rivera of Huntsville was second in 37:38, and won the Masters title. Elias Martinez of Madison was third in 37:47.
Hackney, of Moulton, also picked up her first Spirit win, in 39:51. She was seventh overall. Perla Nunez of Huntsville was second (17th) in 43:58 and won Masters honors. She won the women’s title last year. Jeania Norton of Phil Campbell was third (18th) in 44:12.
Runners were greeted with temperatures in the 70s that climbed quickly, along with stiff humidity.
