Six state age records were set in the annual Cookie Dash 1-Mile run Saturday in Hampton Cove, including the one by overall winner Riley Burris of Arab.
Burris claimed the win with an incredible time of 5:39 on the out-and-back certified course on the Big Cove Greenway. The event is put on and supervised by the Huntsville Track Club, which certifies the courses in its HTC Grand Prix events. Runners in the 1-mile run, as well as the 5K that preceeded it, were chip-timed.
Burris’s time shattered the state record for 8-year-olds, which was 7:01 and set in 2004. She won the race by almost a minute.
Other state age records set Saturday in the 1-mile run, with age, hometown, finishing time and previous record in parentheses:
— Fletcher Boatright, 5, Madison, 7:22 (7:44)
— Maggie Burris, 6, Arab, 7:05 (7:40)
— Kathy Harper, 72, Athens, 7:49 (8:58)
— Jean McCrady, 89, Brownsboro, 14:48 (n/a)
— Mac McCrady, 91, Brownsboro, 17:30 (n/a)
Huntsville Track Club officials are checking on Riley Burris’s time for possible national and world records. TVO will update if either of those are established.
The 5K and 1-mile runs were sponsored by Fleet Feet, Tortora’s of Hampton Cove and Cookie Fix.
Proceeds benefit the Huntsville Community Drumline and the Hampton Cove elementary and middle schools. The drumline sends off runners at the start and welcomes them at the finish with loud, precise drumming.
