TANNER — Averson Brown and Daisy Hernandez cruised to smooth wins on a muggy Friday evening in the 13th annual Swing Through 5K at Calhoun Community College.
Brown, 15, of Eva, sped around the flat, quiet course in 21:04 to take top honors. He nipped Ken Riley, 54, of Hot Springs National Park, Ark., who was right behind in 21:15.
Hernandez, 22, of Elkmont, took top women’s honors and was sixth overall. She finished in 22:32 and was the only woman to crack the Top 15.
Riley’s runner-up finish cinched Men’s Masters honors. Kathy Sandlin, 51, of Moulton, took the Women’s Masters trophy, finishing 17th in 26:40.
The field had 107 official finishers, almost double that of last year’s event. Jim Grow, 74, of Athens, was the oldest finisher, coming in at 57:55 for a personal best. Darci Bain, 6, of Russellville (47:31) and Shane Starkey, 6, of Athens, (29:01) were the youngest.
It was facilitated and timed by the River City Runners. Runners started and ended at the Calhoun College Health Sciences building.
Proceeds benefit the college’s Student Physical Therapist Assistant Fund. The Health Sciences building includes classes and labs for Physical Therapist Assistant, Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, Dental Assisting, Surgical Operating Room technician and Medical Lab technician.
