Tennessee Valley Outsiders are a diverse, adrenaline-fueled group, and it’s a good bet that many are familiar with skateboards and Tony Hawk.
Shredders will have a chance May 31 to win a deck signed by Hawk. How cool is that?
The opportunity will come at the next update gathering for the new skatepark at John Hunt Park in Huntsville. The design team wants to discuss plans and hear community input.
The meeting will be at 5 p.m. at Fractal Brewing.
About the Park
John Hunt Park is a 428-acre multi-use facility in the heart of Huntsville. It was the city’s former airport until the late 1960s. Then part of it became a public golf course, which was converted a few years ago into a world-class running park. The championship caliber cross-country course is a 10-meter wide, manicured grass surface course. Multiple spurred loops provide various distance options including 2-mile, 5K, 6K, 8K, and 10K. The course accommodates high school, NCAA, and USA Track & Field training and competition needs. It also holds local events such as the Recover from the Holidays 50K.
The current downtown skatepark has a few years on it and is ready to grow. The Lydia Gold Skatepark has 13,143 square feet of cement with a bowl, rails, staircases, ledges, banks and a funbox. Expanding to John Hunt Park will allow for more innovation and expansion in size, and the possibility of hosting future events. Tony Hawk likely would approve!
Hawk was 9 years old when he got his first skateboard. He turned pro at age 14, and within two years was known as the best skateboarder in the world. Hawk won the world championship 12 years in a row. He continues to perform demonstrations and exhibitions internationally. Hawk is one of the most recognized action-sports athletes in the world.
Fractal Brewing is located at 3200 Leeman Ferry Road near the north portion of John Hunt Park.
