TVO Roundup: Brothers for Life 5K, Running of the Bulls Volunteers and More

Summer is in full swing along with the return to school, but a few events still are making their way into the TVO Roundup.

Be sure to check out the TVO Calendar for upcoming events. It stretches into December with some holiday favorites, and will be updated with more races.

On to the roundup:

Brothers for Life 5K

DECATUR — Josh Whitehead of Madison won the Brothers for Life 5K on Aug. 10 with a smooth 16:39 time at the line.

Stuart Lamp of Decatur was second in 17:21 and took Male Masters honors. Dane Ard of Decatur was third in 19:17.

Aubrey Owens of Priceville won the women’s title in 23:56. She was 23rd overall.

Ridge to Blazing Ridge

PELHAM, Ala. — Samuel Ongaki of Birmingham won the 14th annual Ridge to Blazing Ridge 20-mile trail run Saturday at Oak Mountain State Park.

Ongaki won by more than eight minutes with his fine time of 3:30:02. That was good for seventh on the event’s Top 10 records. Sierra Morris of Tuscaloosa won the women’s title and was fourth overall in 3:51, which puts her fourth in the women’s record list.

James Ebert of Huntsvile was fifth in 3:52:53. He won the series’ Hotter than Hell race in July. Jill Hardesty (7:47) and Chad Woods (7:48), both of Huntsville, also finished.

Running of the Bulls Volunteers

Volunteers will be needed for the annual Running of the Bulls 5K in Hampton Cove, east of Huntsville.

Runners depart from near Hampton Cove Middle School on the Big Cove Greenway on an out-back route. It’s fast, flat and typically hotter than the Devil’s armpit, but a lot of fun. Who’s the fastest? Grattan O’Neill of Huntsville will be going for a three-peat this year after blistering wins in 2023 and 2022. He won last year by about 2 minutes faster than in 2022.

Volunteers will be needed to help at the start-finish line and on the course in a couple of spots.

Running of the Bulls 5K is a fundraiser for the Hampton Cove Middle School PTA. The 2023 race had 339 finishers in the 5K and several hundred adults and kids in the 1-Mile fun run. It’s popular and is sold out.
