TVO Roundup: Carnival Frolic, Mardi Gras, Railway and New Schedule

The new year has begun with some solid events throughout the region on the roads and trails, as our latest TVO Roundup will attest.

We’re already seeing half marathons and 5K events sprouting like spring daisies, with more to come. These two popular distances, along with the 10K, will be showing up in the coming months before summer arrives. Here are some results from area events in recent weeks.

Mardi Gras 5K

James Fletcher, 39, held off a spry 12-year-old Michael Cosgrove and Theophilis Goins at the finish to win the Blount Hospitality House Mardi Gras 5K in Huntsville on Feb. 3.

Fletcher won the race in 20:07, with Cosgrove nipping his heels in 20:30. Goins, 38, was third in 20:35.

Kaitlyn Powless, 14, won the women’s title in 22:26. She was ninth overall.

Carnival Frolic Half, 5K

Stuart Lamp won the Carnival Frolic half-marathon on Feb. 10 in Decatur with a time of 1:19.

Lamp, of Decatur, won by about six minutes. Jack Rogers of Decatur was second in 1:25.

Angel Mobley of Huntsville was third overall and won the women’s title in 1:28. Samantha Meinkheim of Madison was second (4th overall) in 1:30.

Jacob Wierenga of Huntsville won the 5K race in 19:47. Beth Payne of Decatur won the women’s title, and was fourth overall, in 25:44.

Railway Marathon, 50K, Half

FULTONDALE, Ala. — Hunter Hall of Nashville won the inaugural Railway Marathon on Feb. 3 in 2:47:55.

The event was created after a prior run weekend in Birmingham ended due to lack of police capability to provide safety. The Railway Marathon, Half and other events started at Black Creek Park in Fultondale on the Five Mile Creek Greenway. This rails-to-trail project is located 15 minutes north of Birmingham. Runners raced on through Fultondale, Gardendale and Brookside on a flat, fast and USATF-certified course. 

Emily McEachern of Tuscaloosa won the marathon women’s title in 3:28 and was eighth overall.

Asher Podsednik, 14, of Owens Cross Roads was 20th in 3:54.

Gatlin Holland of Birmingham won the half-marathon in 1:13. Alex Tucker of Huntsville was fifth in 1:22.

Will Sparks of Pelham won the 50K title by almost 40 minutes, finishing in 4:14. Alex Graham of Cincinnati was second in 4:52, and Martin Schneekloth of Huntsville was third in 4:54.
