Happy New Year! We’re just a couple of weeks into it but already have a fine slate of events featuring local athletes in our TVO Roundup.
If you’re into marathons and ultras, now’s the time to get your groove on in the southern half of the country. Local events are heating up, too. Before long we’ll be into spring with 5Ks, 10Ks and other fun events jamming the weekends. Take advantage of the schedule when you can to get outside.
On to the roundup:
Hoka Bandera 100K
Justin Brown of Signal Mountain, Tenn. Mica Anderson of Huntsville and Wendy Halsey-Richardson of Chattanooga completed the Hoka Bandera 100K, one of the country’s top events and a Western States Endurance Run qualifier.
Brown, 41, had a smashing good time of 10 hours, 18 minutes, 21 seconds, to finish seventh overall. He had splits of 4:50:15 and 5:28:06. Anderson, 30, finished in 14 hours, 17 minutes, 3 seconds. She had laps of 6:36:50 and 7:40:13, and was 122nd.
Both easily qualified for WSER lottery entry. The WSER qualifying time for Bandera was 17 hours. The event was Jan. 14 in Bandera, Texas.
Halsey-Richardson, 59, finished in 20 hours, 2 minutes, 6 seconds. She had splits of 8:21:11 and 11:41:15, and finished 294th.
The field had 321 finishers.

HURT 100-Mile
Jamie Holt of Huntsville finished the tough HURT 100-Mile endurance race Jan. 13-14 in Honolulu.
Holt finished 68th in 36:39:02.
The event has five laps (partial out-and-backs) with 24,500 feet of cumulative elevation gain on single-track trails. It has a 36-hour cutoff. The course description says the trails are “through forest, along exposed ridges, and past vertical embankments” with four stream crossings per lap. Runners qualified via lottery and other requirements. The field had 68 finishers from throughout the U.S., including as far as Brooklyn, along with Japan, Canada and England.

Disneyland Half Marathon
Lorna Hutchinson of Gurley finished the Disneyland Half Marathon on Jan. 14 in Anaheim, Calif.
Hutchinson completed the race in 3:23:41. Race results showed 7,616 women and 3,570 men finished the event.
Hutchinson added the Disneyland medal to her Disney World Marathon Weekend Dopey Challenge. The challenge consists of completing the 5K, 10K, Half and Marathon during the weekend, which was Jan. 4-7 in Orlando.
Rabid Raccoon 25K
Jack Martin of White Bluff, Tenn., won the Rabid Raccoon 25K by a minute with his time of 1:55 on Jan. 13 in Chattanooga.
Martin clipped William Sickenberger of Chattanooga, who finished in 1:56:28.
Lea Mulligan of Chattanooga won the women’s title in 2:08. She was sixth overall.
Ten states were represented, including New York, Colorado and Arizona, among the 152 finishers.

Tsali Ultra
Brian Atkinson of North Carolina won the Tsali Ultra 50K on Jan. 13 in North Carolina.
Atkinson crossed the line in 3:35:26 to win by almost two minutes. The 50K field had 53 finishers.
Franklin Baker of Chattanooga won the 30K title in 2:12:08.

Half Naked Half Marathon
Caden Askew of Ashland won the Half Naked Half Marathon on Jan. 13 in Anniston.
Askew finished in 1:24:43 to win by more than four minutes.
Jessa Nash of Lineville won the women’s title and was 8th overall. She finished in 1:50:57.

Mad Backyard Ultra
Kyle Kalbus of Chattanooga won the 4th annual Mad Backyard Ultra on Jan. 13 in East Ridge, Tenn.
Kalbus finished with 120.93 miles, second to his record of 133 miles set a year ago. Runners do a 4.1667-mile loop every hour until one person is standing
Runner-up Bob Adams of Ooltewah, Tenn., had 116 miles, good for fourth on the all-time men’s list. Bradley Cope of Arab finished with 62 miles.

Houston Marathon
Peter Gonzalez of Decatur led local Alabama finishers in the Chevron Houston Marathon on Jan. 13.
Gonzalez finished in 3:03:27, a 7-minute pace. He was 607th overall. Shane Powell of Birmingham led all Alabama finishers. He was 217th, finishing in 2:48:43.
Other TVO area finishers included Scotty Aycock of Florence (3:08:47), Joseph Gray of Florence (3:19:34), Hallie Nix of Huntsville (3:34:45) and Jon Elmore of Decatur (3:47:56).
Zach Buffington of Chattanooga was the top Tennessee finisher, in 2:33:41. Kristen Robison of Knoxville was the top women’s finisher, in 2:54:04.

Several TVO-area runners completed the Aramaco Houston Half Marathon, too, including Pedro Gonzalez of Decatur (1:50:50), Lucy Cerda of Decatur (2:16), Sarah Green of Owens Cross Roads (2:24) and Israel Gonzalez of Decatur (2:45).

Kelly Elmore of Decatur finished the We Are Houston 5K in 35:25, with Jeanolivia Grant of Harvest finishing in 51:21 and Albert Dean of Harvest crossing in 51:21.
