It was a busy weekend in the area, as our latest TVO Roundup will attest, with a handful of events and news about others coming soon.
A Race for the Ages
Janice Sutton of Madison completed 100 miles at A Race for the Ages in Manchester, Tenn., over the weekend.
Sutton, 67, was among the ultramarathoners competing at Fred Deadman Park on the certified 1-mile loop. She’s pictured in the main photo above (at left) with Christy Scott, who crewed her at the event also is her trainer.
According to the race site, all runners age 41 and over are allotted a number of hours equal to their age in which to accumulate as many miles as possible. All those age 40 and younger will compete over the final 40 hours of the race. The winner is the runner with the most miles accumulated by the finish. In 2019, 34 participants age 70 and older completed more than 100 miles and one participant, at 74 years old, completed 230 miles.
Tupelo Marathon
Melissa McDonald of Lacey’s Spring knocked off the Tupelo Marathon in 6:12:19 on Saturday.
McDonald, 58, completed the first half in 2:47 and carried a 14:30 pace for the event.

Other area finishers in the marathon included Bailey Tarvin of Boaz (3:06), Mark Maclin of Athens (3:56), Stuart Bethel of Hazel Green (4:15), Gage Gross of Madison (4:27), Ruth Marie Oliver of Owens Cross Roads (5:04) and Timothy Smith of Owens Cross Roads (5:27).

Ronnie Schilling of Huntsville completed the Tupelo 14.2-mile race in 2:19. Other area finishers included Rene Reder of Decatur (2:46), Suzanne Erickson of Hampton Cove (3:13) and Casey Fritz of Hampton Cove (3:13).

Oak Ridge Qualifier: Half, Marathon
Alex Morgan won the Oak Ridge Qualifier Marathon on Sept. 3 in a time of 2:50:22.
Etienne Sophia claimed the women’s title in 3:18:46. She was sixth overall.
Nine runners participated and here are the results. Sixteen runners participated in the half-marathon.
River City Runners 7@7
Steven Brown of Decatur and Mandy Leonardi of Cullman won the men’s and women’s titles at the River City Runners’ 7@7 7K race on Aug. 26 in Decatur.
Brown, 51, won the overall title in 30:09, with Leonardi, 35, right behind him in second at 30:38.
Matt Dukes, 43, of Huntsville, was third in 33:12 and won the Masters division. Perla Nunez, 41, of Huntsville, won the Women’s Masters division with her finish of 14th in 38:01.

Glow in the Park 5K
The inaugural RunningLane Events Glow in the Park 5K, a nighttime event, will be Sept. 16 at John Hunt Park in Huntsville.
Proceeds will benefit the Redstone Army 10 Miler Team, which has sustained budget cuts in recent years. This event directly benefits Team Redstone’s entry fee and travel to the Army 10 Miler in Washington, D.C. This race runs on the nationally renown John Hunt XC Park course, which features superb footing. The course is 100 percent grass and manicured to provide fast times and great footing.
All runners will receive a t-shirt, light-up sunglasses and glow sticks which can be made into bracelets or necklaces.

Tweed Ride 2023
Start making plans now for the 2023 Tweed Ride, set for Nov. 4 at the Lowery House in Huntsville.
This will be the most dapper cycling event in Huntsville, featuring a delightful gathering of vintage bike enthusiasts and fashion-forward riders.
Riders will enjoy scenic neighborhoods of Huntsville and the spirt of a bygone era. Vintage bikes are welcome but not required. The ride will end at L’Etoile Patisserie for a post-ride celebration.

Fleet Feet Fall Fitness Festival
The Fleet Feet Fall Fitness Festival will be Sept. 9 at Hays Farm in south Huntsville.
The festival will feature a community fun run, kids run and community bike ride. Almost 30 exhibitors including food trucks and other local businesses will be on hand. Events include free pop-up fitness classes from local fitness studios.
