Daniel Sillivant claimed a narrow victory and two state age records were smashed in the UAH Spring 8K on Sunday in Huntsville.
Sillivant, 36, of Huntsville, won the race on the UAH campus in 28:23. He nipped John Glidewell, 66, of Athens, at the wire as Glidewell crossed in 28:46. Nathaniel Pierce, 36, of Huntsville, was third in 29:45.
Glidewell smashed the state age record with his time. The record was 32:31. Glidewell was third last autumn in the Spooktacular 5K and is no stranger to competitive racing. He has a storied background as one of the nation’s top distance runners in the 1980s.
Kathy Harper, 72, of Athens, also smashed the state age record with her time of 44:15. The previous record was 47:59.
Julia Donovan, 38, of Huntsville, was the first female to cross the 8K tape in a time of 33:32. She was 14th overall. Nina Sillivant, 28, of Huntsville, was second (39th) in 39:08, and Vivian Zou, 52, of Florence, was third (43rd) in 39:43.
Runners had a fantastic afternoon with clear skies and sunshine for the UAH Spring 8K, which is facilitated by the Huntsville Track Club. A donation is made to benefit the Huntsville Dialysis Center in remembrance of long time HTC member Earl Jacoby. The race had 212 finishers.
