Visit Tuscaloosa Half Marathon Partners with Secret Meals For Hungry Children

The Visit Tuscaloosa Half Marathon + Publix 5K have partnered with Secret Meals For Hungry Children, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending childhood food insecurity.

The marathon and 5K are scheduled for March 23, starting at Government Plaza in Tuscaloosa.

“I am thrilled Secret Meals will be a benefiting charity,” said Nicole Fulgham, program director for Secret Meals. “While our mission is to end childhood food insecurity in our communities, we also strive to encourage healthy lifestyles. This partnership can help us with both.”

The partnership aims to raise awareness and funs for weekend food packs. These are distributed to elementary-age students identified by their school officials as going hungry over the weekend. Funds from runners and sponsors will directly impact students in West Alabama. Currently, Secret Meals serves 1,778 students in West Alabama every weekend. It costs $4 to feed one child each weekend.

A 5K to benefit Secret Meals was held in Huntsville in November 2022, raising thousands of dollars.

About Secret Meals For Hungry Children

Alabama Credit Union started Secret Meals For Hungry Children in 2008. It since has expanded throughout the state of Alabama and Northwest Florida. The organization works with school officials to identify students facing food insecurity.

To allow as many children to receive weekend food packs as possible, Alabama Credit Union provides all promotional and operational funding for the Secret Meals program. That means 100 percent of donations goes toward purchasing food packs.
