Wet Dog Triathlon: Moore, Castelli Grab the Gold

DECATUR — Lance Moore held off his closest competitors Saturday morning to win the 24th Wet Dog Triathlon at Point Mallard Park.

Moore, 29, of Harvest, finished the swim, bike and run portions in 49:30. He also won the event in 2023. Moore had a swim of 5:51, bike of 22:21 and run of 18:46, with transitions of 1:38 and 57 seconds.

Anthony Tiffon, 27, of Florence, was second in 49:44 and Matt Fletcher, 26, of Madison, was an almost-gotcha third in 49:48. Fletcher won the 2024 event, with Moore second.

Tayaya Castelli, 40, of Madison, claimed the women’s division title in 58:19. The top three women finished within a minute of each other. Castelli had a swim of 6:57, bike of 25:32 and run of 23:26, with transitions of 1:41 and 44 seconds. Castelli was third last year.

Charlene Robinson, 35, of Madison, was second in 59:02. Cynthia Mitchell, 47, of Athens, was just a couple of steps behind in 59:15 for third.

Wet Dog includes a 400-meter open water swim, followed by a 15k bike ride and a 5k run along the Tennessee River. It is considered one of the best for first-time triathletes thanks to the flat bike and running courses. Wet Dog is a fundraiser for Mosaic Mentoring of North Alabama, a non-profit child and family mentoring organization.

The event had 200 finishers from five states including Oregon.
