Outstanding performances highlight this week’s WKND Wrap, including a solid outing in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race and a longtime Alabama triathlon.
Several solid events are on the local calendar in the coming months, including:
— Running of the Bulls 5K in Hampton Cove and The Cam Run in Chattanooga, both on Aug. 29
— Race for Justice 10K and 5K, on Sept. 7
— Swing Through 5K at Calhoun CC, on Friday evening, Sept. 11
— Boston or Bust marathon, half, on Sept. 13

Fort Frenzy Ultra
VONORE, Tenn. — Tina Hicks of Huntsville led a hearty crew in the Fort Frenzy Ultra 12-hour race at Tellico Lake.
Hicks, 57, finished eighth with 47.4502 miles and was third in the women’s division.
The event was part of a multi-category festival, and consisted of a 3.65-mile trail loop with about 500 feet of elevation per loop. The trail around Tellico Lake started and ended at a pavilion.
Lindsey Shady, 45, of Huntsville, was 11th with 43.8007 miles. Christy Scott, 53, of Owens Cross Roads, was 19th with 40.15 miles.

Wild Thangs Chupacabra
On an insanely hot, humid morning at Monte Sano State Park, almost 300 trail runners completed the final Wild Thangs Series events of the summer with the 9th annual Chupacabra Half and 10K.
Christopher Kitson, 30, of Huntsville, captured top honors in the half-marathon with a time of 2:01:51. Kitson won by more than four minutes. Angela Tieri, 41, of Owens Cross Roads, won the women’s title and was seventh overall. She finished in 2:47:17.
In the 10K race, Mark Ullom won by more than four minutes in one of the event’s top finishes. Ullom, 42, of Madison, crossed in 44:22, which is fourth-best on the Top 10 list. That gives him three of the race’s top 10 finishes, including in 2021 and ’22.
Jessica Troyer, 43, of Huntsville, won the women’s title and was 12th overall. She finished in 59:35.
Runners hit some of the park’s familiar trails, with both dropping into McKay Hollow and the 10K climbing Death Trail to the overlook finish. Half runners toodled on out to the Land Trust parking lot, hitting Arrowhead, Natural Well and back up Death Trail to the finish. It’s a beast in August, but the hearty and determined survived.

Red Devil 5K
ELKMONT — Aidan Ennis, 16, of Athens, won the Red Devil 5K on Aug. 12 in a thrilling finish.
Ennis clipped Dawson Zorio, 17, at the wire to win by one second, in 17:23.
The race was put on by the Elkmont Athletic Club and had 107 finishers.

Dukes 7@7
DECATUR — Stuart Lamp of Decatur won the Bill Dukes 7@7 race at Point Mallard Park on Aug. 22.
Lamp, 43, won the 7K event in 27:18. Sophie-Paige Lamp, 14, of Decatur, won the women’s division and was 9th overall, in 32:27.
A 7K is 4.3496 miles. The race had 78 official finishers and was put on by River City Runners.

Leadville Trail 100 MTB
LEADVILLE, Col. — Ran Crump of Madison earned his buckle at the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race on Aug. 15.
Crump, 30, rode 101.3 miles in 11:07:19, a 9.11 mph pace.
The Leadville Trail 100 MTB began in 1994. The 100-mile course includes about 12,000 feet of elevation gain. It reaches a peak elevation of 12,600 feet above sea level at the summit of Columbine Mine.

Buster Britton Tri
PELHAM — Matt Fletcher finished third in the 42nd Buster Britton Memorial Triathlon at Oak Mountain State Park on Aug. 22.
Fletcher, 28, of Madison, was third in the Sprint Tri category, in 1:02:33. He had a swim of 6:11, ride of 35:51 and run of 18:25.
Joan Iacobelli, 72, of Cullman, was third in the Womens 70-74 category with a finish of 2:10:53. She had a swim of 13:59, bike of 1:03:55 and run of 46:44.
Fletcher and Iacobelli are members of the Team Rocket Tri Club of Huntsville.
