Wild Thangs Series Kicks Off at Chilly Monte Sano State Park

Mark Ullom and Jane Murawski won the Frozen Yeti 10-mile trail run titles and led a gaggle of record-setters in the Winter Wild Thangs trail series Saturday at Monte Sano State Park.

Ullom, 41, won the overall title in 1:18:42 and Murawski, 45, won the women’s title in 1:40:04. She was 17th overall. Both are from Huntsville and are now atop the Top 10 list for the 10-mile event. The winter series was started last year, joining its longtime and popular summer series at the park.

Jonathan Krichev (2nd, 1:21:49) and Andrew Bustos (3rd, 1:28:33) also jumped to the top of the records. Krichev was second on the list already and bumped his time by four minutes.

Vivian Zou (2nd, 22nd overall, 1:49) and Teresa Brininger (3rd, 25th, 1:54:56) jumped into the women’s top 10 list, as well. Zou shaved about 18 minutes off of her 2024 time.

Trails were clean, dry and conditions were nippy but sunny and good for the 10- and 5-mile jaunts through the state park trails. The Wild Thangs series continues Jan. 3 with a 10K and half-marathon, and Jan. 17 with a 30K and 15K. Running Lane puts on the events.

The 10-miler had 82 official finishers.

Frozen Yeti 5-Mile

David Wall, 38, of Huntsville sped to the 5-mile win in 41:02, easily putting him on top of the Top 10 list by more than four minutes.

Daniel Leonard (3rd overall, 2nd male, 44:27) and Hayden Arceneaux (4th, 3rd, 44:42) pursued Drown. They’re now second and third on the Top 10 list.

Addison Isbell, 15, of Huntsville was 10th overall in 50:20 and is now No. 2 on the records list. Kayla Haynes finished 13th in 52:02 for third in the women’s division and a notch in the record list.
