Speedy winners Megan Allan and Zach Mitarotonda had record finishes as the Summer Wild Thangs trail series kicked off May 20 at Monte Sano State Park.
Allan, 42, of Huntsville, topped her Big Foot 10K course record from last year by more than two minutes. She finished fifth overall, in 42:59, and was among five women in the Top 20. Breah Crocker, 16, of Pulaski, Tenn., was second (8th) in 52:30, sixth best in the record list.
Mitarotonda, 23, of Huntsville, sped to the win in 42:31, fourth-best in the men’s records. Luis Guillermo Carreno Moreno, 36, of Smyrna, Tenn., was second, in 43:44. That time puts him eighth on the records list.
The race had 148 official finishers from eight states including Wisconsin and Arizona.
The 10K and 5K trail runs kicked off the four-event summer series, all held at Monte Sano State Park. Each event has a long and short run. The series ends in August and is put on by Running Lane Events.
In the 5K race, Matthew Yeager, 17, of Cumming, Ga., took top honors with a time of 24:13. That tied a 7-year-old record for 10th best. Yeager was five seconds ahead of Alex Allen, 29, of Owens Cross Roads.
Alissa Winja, 34, of Huntsville, was third, just two seconds behind Allen in 24:20. The race had 184 official finishers from five states, including Texas.
