T.J. Richardson of Arkansas and Julia Day of Kentucky won the men’s and women’s titles Saturday in the inaugural Rocket City Marathon 5K.
Weaving through downtown Huntsville, the event was dubbed the Mural 5K. Runners got to see parts of Old Town, such as Constitution Village, along with some of the city’s vibrant murals on building walls. The course zigged and zagged through parts of the Hurley 5K route before returning past the Tinsel Trail and Big Spring Park into the VBC finish line.
Richardson, 15, finished in 18:11 for the win. Paul Escajadillo, 40, of Minnesota was second in 19:35, and Tom Krijnen, 25, of Huntsville was third in 19:39.
Day, 20, zipped to the women’s division title in 21:10 and was seventh overall. Olivia Lambert, 17, of Georgia, was second (8th) in 21:23, and Stacy Chesnutt, 51, of Nova Scotia, was third (15th) in 22:50.
The 5K started at 9 a.m. in front of the Von Braun Center and had 320 runners finish.

All of the marathon weekend races and activites are a Huntsville Track Club event.
