Sky to Summit 50K, 25K

Derek Barnes and Dauna Coulter competed in the 11th annual Sky to Summit events last weekend in Sky Valley, Ga.

Barnes, of Madison, finished 18th in the 50K in a time of 6:44:51. The field had 191 finishers from 17 states.

Coulter, of Huntsville, smashed the 25K course on Sunday in 4:44, finishing 105th and third in her age group. The 25K had 139 finishers from 13 states including Alaska and Wisconsin.

The course began at Sky Valley Resort just east of Dillard, Ga., with an immediate 3-mile climb to the top of Rabun Bald. That’s the second-highest point in Georgia. Runners had to climb the viewing tower and then scamper down the backside. Mid-miles “flat” trails gave way to a second climb of the bald before finishing downhill at Sky Valley. Unseasonable heat was not welcomed but it was better than rain or ice.

Marine Corps Marathon, 10K

A handful of area runners competed in the 48th Marine Corps Marathon and 10K over the weekend in Washington, D.C.

Among those we know of were SD Segura completing the 10K, and her husband Dan along with Vince Rivera, Perla Núñez, David Bier and Jack McGee.
