Chris Roth of Huntsville won the Georgia Jewel 35-mile trail race on Sept. 16, with James Ebert of Huntsville finishing fourth in the 100-mile event as a host of area runners fared well in four races.
The Georgia Jewel, based in Dalton, consists of 100-mile, 50-mile, 35-mile and 18-mile races on the Pinhoti Trail. It is Georgia’s “longest-standing 100-mile trail race.” For many runners the Jewel is their goal for the year. Others use it as a warmup of sorts for the Pinhoti 100 in November.
Roth, 39, won the 35-mile race in 6:09:51, finishing about eight minutes ahead of the runner-up. Nicholas Horvath, 38, of Chattanooga, was third in 6:33:29, and Rebekah Searels, 29, of Chattanooga, was second female and fifth overall in 6:44:21.
